>Ah, the "We need a magazine thing again..."
Hey Bill.....Welcome to the ranks of "olde tymer" with your recollections of
magazines past and present and almost dead. Never had such a young feller
join up before. Welcome aboard! Mark my words, every three years regular
as clockwork.
>As I sit here I cannot think of any major new S products in over a year.
Hey Bill...Since last year's O SCALE WEST + S convention, there have been a
whole slew of painted RTR Sharks from River Raisin Models. Some even in the
dreaded dirty brown paint scheme with imitation gold stripes. Not to
mention the elegant two-tone gray lightning stripes. And the B&O
gold/blue/gray/black paint job that most of us out here thought was really
the prettiest of the bunch. And, Dan Navarre was showing off pilot models
(yes, plural!) of brand spanking new SP steam engines which were hand
delivered by Boo Rim -- a premier builder of fine stuff. These ran well on
Arden Goehring's home layout even though the yellow UP engines were
dominating the scene. Not to mention Kaslo's new NYC caboose kit came out
this past year. I now have four of them all built up and kit-bashed and on
display for my home layout visit at O SCALE WEST + S. The Jim King low side
gondola is new. Something else (forgot what) from Kaslo is new, but since
it is modern I didn't pay much attention. New stuff is in the SHS catalog
and is coming -- but not here quite yet. Much as I like SHS stuff, the
rummy red-nosed reindeer didn't do much for me. But the profits might get
put into the SHS E-7 which would make me happy. Yep, Wade & Co. delivered a
depressed center flat car recently although I am not sure it was exactly
within the past 12 months. Mine just got built recently and that is what
counts around here. My goal is to have ZERO unbuilt kits and I am making
good progress toward that goal thanks to some mighty fine RR buddies many of
whom I have never even met. Also, John Botton has delivered the unpainted
versions of his brass outside braced gondola this past year. Ask Bill
Winans -- he actually has one. The Des Plaines Hobbies double plug door box
car was available at O SCALE WEST + S -- assembled and painted via our
Chinese buddies. As well as many new paint schemes on older PRS body
castings such as the grain hopper, etc. All RTR for those of us without
much time and lots of money. Not to mention new paint jobs on many existing
S Scale America products such as tank cars and containers, etc. Didn't Andy
Mallette, the famous frozen fellow who is our neighbour to the North,
announce a new forthcoming kit for something resembling a combine? And I
cannot even begin to list the new structures that have come out this past
year.
If this is considered a "lull", I would almost hate to see a really good
year since I could not possible afford to keep up with it all. I am sure I
left out a few new releases and would like to apologize to those unmentioned
folks who made something new this past year, but my memory is forgetful at
my ripe old age. Or is it that I am getting ripe due to forgetting to take
a shower? Oh well, you get my point.
Bring on the new stuff. I cannot wait to see it. Did'ja notice that Lionel
has announced a UP Big Boy? Now if only someone would make a scale
conversion kit for that, we'd really have something. SSLS where are you
when we need you? Simon: Are you listening?
Cheers...Ed L.
