I agree with Harold when he said "The 'net is the hobby shop of the 21st
century." And "That is why promoting S scale is so much more important on the
web than in print. Not to make it as big as HO but to expand the base so
there
will be more incentive for manufacturers.

I think S could do a lot more to promote itself with videos on UTUBE in
conjunction with links on the NASG and other websites. There are already a
few
really good videos out there, including layouts operating at the NASG
convention in Baltimore. But there is a whole lot more we could do.

One of the problems with UTUBE is that the index is so unorganized. There
are probably some S scale (or call it gauge if you want to) on UTube that I
have not found. And if one searches for S scale videos, he will have to wade
through a lot of layouts that are not S.

If we the members of NASG and members of this Yahoo site were to put more S
train videos on UTUBE and index them in a standard format so that they would
be easy for all to find, that would help. And the videos could be listed by
topic with weblinks on the NASG (and Wiki?) site. Indexing by topic could
include listings of trains by manufacturer or type of train. There could be
videos demonstrating AM steamers, SHS steamers, the various diesels, or full
length passenger trains, etc. This would make it so much easier for people
evaluating trains to see what is available in S and let them actually see the
products in operation. The manufacturers should have a participatory interest
in this to be able to show their products. And they would want to add the
links on their own websites to the UTUBE videos showing their products.

One example of a really good video is the one featuring SHS at the National
Toy Train Museum with Jim Lyle as host. I would like to see more videos like
this going into even more detail to show the SHS products and similar ones
showing AM and other manufacturers. And even though I am not a promoter of
Flyonel products, I think we could attract more people into buying more
scale-like products if we had videos showing how Gilbert locos could pull
rolling
stock with Kadee style couplers and full length passenger cars on track other
than American Flyer. This could encourage highrailers to make the first step
toward operating scale trains. That is what happened to me. And I would
have moved a lot further and quicker if it had not been so hard to get
information on what worked and what did not (track, couplers, ac vs dc, etc.).

A lot of the UTUBE videos are of dubious quality. Some might be pretty good
except for being just a few seconds long. Others are long but just show the
same train going around and around.

Some of owners of the most interesting layouts may not be into doing the
videos. But what if NASG volunteers who are good at videos were encouraged to
make videos of those layouts? Some layout owners might not want to
participate but I think most of them would. I have seen videos of Ed
Loizeaux's layout
on UTube and have purchased the wonderful video of Brooks Stover's Buffalo
Creek and Gauley. But I sure would like to see layouts of Bill Lane's, Dick
Karnes, and a whole of others' layouts.

The pics that we have on the NASG website and other S sites are great, but
how much better it would be to have video with sound and motion.
