Hi,
What a terrible shame that John "Jack" Chappell and his STEAM DEPOT isn't
remembered.
Jack came on the S gauge scene when we needed him the most. (Back in the late
1980's early 1990's?)
He was a big spender and offered a very large Steam Depot "Free" catalog full
of S gauge offerings .
As I write this I'm laughing at the inventory he offered and the prices quoted
in his catalogs
Jack discounted most of his materail, as he wasn't interested in a big profit,
just interested in getting a lot of modelers interested in S gauge.
American Models, S Helper Service, Pacific Rail Shops and others were just
really getting started back then and Jack offered them all through his Steam
Depot. Many at a discount!
Jack ran into trouble when he started offering S Helpers Service equipment at
lower prices than the SHS company and others could.
This is not to blame anyone, surely with all the new money invested by SHS and
others, they couldn't afford this happening.
Also, if you had a major want, Jack would find a way to get it! He still has a
couple hundred three bay Pennsylvania Railroad hoppers he would like to move.
Anyway, Jack came to Steam Town in 2001 and literally "dumped" most of
everything he had in his hobby inventory, it was like a fire sale.
(Even the sellers "UNOWHO" were buying up his offerings) I spent couple hundred
myself and am still kicking myself for not buying the 4-8-0 brass Camelback for
$300.00
Yes, Jack Chappell is a great guy and he is now very happy now collecting
antique automobiles.
However, he still has S gauge inventory he would like to sell.
So, if you would like to buy the balance, he still lives in Ashland, Pa. and
I'm not sure this phone number works anymore but give Jack a call at
570-875-2361 his office address - 1838 Walnut St. Ashland, Pa. 17921 (I
believe his State Farm Insurance Agency is now operated by his daughter.)
Life does go on, so sad that most of us won't be remembered. We found that out
with the Frank Titman, Spiral Hill Hoppers investment!
Let me know if you would like to purchase a "Spiral Hill Hopper" for your
layout or perhaps the three car set, we still have about a hundred to move!
Have a great day,
Billy Fraley
