Retirement? I won't retire, just keel over from pouring castings until I'm
blind. Either my widow or one of the kids can plant be beside the track in
a fresh pile of ballast, preferably along the Southern Ry. in the NC
mountains.
Seriously, though, my dad retired in his early 60s following a heart attack.
He sold his accounting firm and they moved to NC where I was in college from
1977-81. Being an only child, they moved where I moved in most cases, which
was fine with me. His allergies got worse in NC, worse yet in VA and sapped
his energy. He once had a fairly complete stamp collection and over 400
classical music records he'd play often but lost interest in both and his
health (and mind) spiraled downward quickly. We later determined that he
MIGHT have had early Parkinson's disease but without the typical
hand-shakes. At least 2 of the kids remember their Grandpa.
Moral of the story is just like Bob McCarthy and others have stated: KEEP
ACTIVE (as much as your health will allow). I enjoy all aspects of my
business and that's a BIG part to staying active (find something you like to
do and keep at it).
