Hi Ed,
I know of what you speak, about a year ago I got a price on having a
cutter made from a specialty wood products shop. I took a piece of wood
roof stock I got years ago from Ed Loizeaux that is a match for the Am
Flyer streamlined profile. They gave me a price of $150 with the
stipulation that I would buy at least 200 linear ft of poplar cut from
it. I need enough stock for maybe 4 cars max and have nowhere to store
(and hope it doesn't warp or worse) nor did I want to tackle being a
middle man to distribute this to others in S. (Too many variables come
into play.....what thickness sides each individual would use governing
the depth of the recess in the cut, what length each would want/need,
etc) Matching floor stock would have to be up to the individual modeler.
A better alternative would be to have resin roofs made up, but those
variables come into play again.
An article on scratchbuilding from styrene in the January 2004 MR
shows how an O scaler made curved formers over which he applied .015"
styrene sheet. His technique for making fluted sides is also worth a look.
