I've been traveling this weekend so just catching up on this thread.  If you 
want a correct roof contour, use the old JC Models kits for a "core" kit.  The 
roof is wood but correctly contoured for P-S cars.  I've successfully covered 
those roofs with 0.005 styrene to simulate a better metal roof and because I 
really hate sand sealing bass wood!!

I've also successfully used Evergreen corrugated material to make side 
corrugations to simulate P-S fluted cars.  It looks pretty good although the 
number of corrugations is off by one or two.  I did the CRI&P obs "Memphis" 
that way.  The car is on the DPV layout, we'll get a photo posted someday...

All the talk about the AM cars length has not mentioned that "as built" the AM 
streamline cars are not the correct height.  While 6" isn't a lot, they scale 
at 13' rather than 13' 6", it is just enough (for me at least) to make the side 
skirt look funny in relation to underbody detail when the car is raised to the 
prototype height.   I suppose we each have our quirks when it comes to 
modeling...
