Gentlemen
Over the last few days we have read a range of comments concerning S scale
couplers, ranging from information, comments and reasons, through to a
person wanting to spend other peoples money to satisfy their wants.
For North American prototypes we have 4 variations (Kadee No 5 and variants,
802/808s, Sargeant and the SHS 1295) and all seem to have their fans and
detractors.
If you think that is not good enough, then spend a day on a British S scale
exhibition layout, coupling/uncoupling S scale wagons (freight cars) or
passenger coaches that use 3 link couplings.
What are 3 link couplings - at the end of the wagon/coach, between the two
outer buffers, is a hook from which dangles 3 links of a chain. The final
link has to be attached to the hook of the adjacent wagon/coach. How is this
acheived - by using a hook of fine wire to pick up that link and drop on to
the adjacent wagon hook - or the reverse.
After 6 - 8 hours working with this type of coupler, the Kadee style
coupler, regardless of size and 'faults', is like manna from heaven. I'm
sure 2 others on this list (with far more time spent in this pursuit) would
agree that some just don't know how lucky they are.
Regards
John Prior
Ps. Oh - did I mention the links were oversize!
