Friends,

We got our power back at the house yesterday evening, so we're pretty
lucky as neighbors a few blocks away don't have it yet. ah the hum of
portable generators!

I spent most of yesterday singing the song by the Drifters---"Up on the
Roof"! Actually I wasn't singing but pounding away making temporary
roof repairs. Again nothing was massive but its still going to require
a whole new roof. Actually the 'train room addition' to my home (a
second story addition above my garage) was mostly built by S gaugers for
S Gaugers using a lot heavier wood than Northeastern stripwood faired
better than the rest of the house. Unfortunately the deductible for
wind damage down here has been raised to several thousand, so I may have
to let loose of some trains soon. Actually I'm closing out some stuff
on e-bay tonite.

As you've probably have seen on the news the area I mentioned in my note
to Bill Fraley was quite correct. The Galveston area was being pounded
six hours before we got any light winds. Since there are also about 1
3/4 million without power the need for ice, water, food and gasoline is
getting testy. Fema has yet to get a grasp on what their mission really
is although this is certainly a world better than New Orleans of three
years ago.

Incidentally, our lone East side member, Rusty Paulus has been found in
his home with only the usual damage. His neighborhood is on higher
ground than most of the area, so he was fine and actually got electric
service before we did.

I remaining question is the economic outlooks for many folks is rather
bleak. If I was a few years younger, I would be hiring out as a
carpenter because there will be work for many years to come.

A little S content, the area could us some help from all those lead
figures that helped build GPNRR roundhouse a few months ago!
