Ed,

I [and others] have had model railroad atrophies.

Mine was when the washer hose that broke at night, and I found about 18 inches
of water on my basement floor and still raising.

I put on boots, went to the water main and turned off the water. Then I called
the fire company who came in the middle of the night and hooked up pumps and
emptied out all the water. Next, I called my insurance company, then I carried
all the ruined "stuff" out and dumped it.

Never, never, have anything of value on your basement floor. If you have to
have stuff down there, build pallets for your boxes to sit on.

Have a very good Wet-Dry vacuum to pump out what ever is left over, also set up
a de-humidifier and let it run!

The insurance man came, assessed the damage, took pictures, plus he had
pictures of what I had taken.
Paid me for clean up, Repaired and /or replaced all other damaged articles.

Then he said, I never have assessed a model railroad before. I explained what I
had in each piece of equipment and so on. He came up with a satisfactory price
and we accepted. We never ever gave him a bad time!

He then said, I should send all this to a "rummage house", but if you like, you
may keep it.

Mary and I kept everything. Later we took every piece of equipment out into the
back yard, it was very sunny and hot. Laid each piece on a large piece of
canvas and let "Mother Nature" dry [baked] it out. Final damage, the loss of
"Train Stuff" boxes, everything inside the boxes dried out satisfactory. We
then placed each Train Stuff kit into a plastic bag. Most of my other kit boxes
died out.

As I gradually repaired my layout trying to get it ready for the July 2001 -
Scranton convention, I checked and oiled each piece of equipment, placed it on
the layout and it is still running to this very day.

That week in July Mary and I had many of you in our home and the trains were
running, there was plenty Hershey candy and Dafnoes Subs, Chips, drinks!

We all had a marvelous time, Mary and I were so happy to have you all
fellowshipping in our in our home, running trains, and yes, we did have a great
time, didn't we!

That is why I'm an S Gauger, never met a nicer group of people!

"Alls well that ends well!"
