Hey Rusty... betcha I can make more smoke than you! I cooked a
LokSound decoder in a Niagara pulling a heavy train. Smoke was
rolling out of the cab and stack by the time I was done!! <G>
Following up on Bill's point, the LokSound folks replaced the decoder
no questions asked when I sent it back with the receipt.
I do have a non-sound NCE decoder in an Allegheny that has performed
flawlessly. If I could find an Allegheny sound file, I would add
sound, but no luck on that yet. My next step with the Niagara will
be to install an NCE decoder to run the engine/lights and a LokSound
decoder for sound only. That adds the cost of the NCE decoder, but
it's less than 20 bucks. I've had excellent luck that way on
diesels; I'll let you know how the Niagara reacts. One other thing,
I'm assuming you already know this, but for DCC you should always
make sure the motor is electrically isolated from the frame. Poofed
a few early Digitrax decoders that way in my "learning DCC the hard
way" days...!
Those Maxon motors cost more than $100 for a reason!!!
Good luck...
