I have done a number of these. First, you should download and print
the full instructions from the Internet. The cheesy ones they give
you with the package don't give enough information.
It is very important that when you stall your loco to check the motor
draw (hold it on the track, stop the drivers and measure the amperage
draw)that it does not exceed 1 amp. If it does, replace the motor.
If you are using open frame then you are asking for trouble. I am
sure that you already knew and that you used DC for this.
Coreless motors are very good in that they draw very little (20 to 30
milliamps) and if they have a gearhead, they will allow you to run at
scale speeds. There is a bit of gear whine but IMHO, the superb
operation compensates for this. (This is another story not for this
post.)
Good can motors should do the trick as well. If they are worth
anything, they should give all the specs.
Next follow the instructions to the TEE.
You need a good speaker to drive the lower frequencies. Make sure
that it has an 8 OHM resitance. Anything less will burn out the
Tsunami. (I got that one from Dan Kirlin) In audio circles, it
should be the other way around but this is trains and nothing is ever
as it seems or should be.
You can use two speakers one in the tender for bass and one in the
loco for treble. Two 4 OHM speakers installed in series would work
but lots of extra wiring, a pain IMHO.
Always be wary of current draw in milliamps especially when lighting
comes into question. I have used many combinations of resistors
depending on the current draw of the bulb. Once again dimmer is
better IMHO and the bulbs last longer. The LED's don't just look
incadescent yet.
AFAIK, if you burn a Tsunami out, they are warrantied. However,
policies change as time goes on.
The fun part is the programming. There is a lot you can do.
Experiment and you will eventually find what you need. It may take
time but once you get to the point where you have found your groove,
it's a piece of cake.
I hope this helps. If you need more information, they have a help
line or you could email me or better yet other list members who have
had more experience. I believe there is a Yahoo group dedicated to
the Tsunami.
I have not gotten the diesel one yet. But then again...it's only a
diesel. Why do diesels need sound? The gear sounds are good enough,
