To List,
Yesterday, I had an opportunity to visit the de funked Gloorcraft Kit
facility in Oak Harbor, Ohio. I met with the auctioneer along with a couple of
local Fremont kit bashers. The company will be liquidated on October 25th at 9
AM, at the site in Oak Harbor. Everything will be auctioned, from complete
kits, to kit parts, dies, power tools, boxes, and more boxes and more boxes,
empty and full of parts for N, HO and O scale. I could find only one or two
boxes of S scale kit items, to include parts for an N&W 2-bay hopper. I'm sure
the older kit bashers on this list recall that Gloorcraft took over Ambroid
Kits some years back. From the looks of the upstairs manufacturing and
assembly room, nothing has been kited for a number of years. I think they were
a big supplier for Walthers. Gloorcraft cut there own wood strips and parts
from blocks of wood as well as spin molded all of their metal parts. I'm not
sure why the business is being liquidated as this is not an estate auction.
Perhaps the interest in kit building is just not out there anymore. From what
the auctioneer told me, they will be breaking down segments of the equipment
and parts, and attempting to auction that way. IMHO, they have an enormous job
over the next couple of weeks getting everything together and moved to another
part of the facility. I believe most everything, with maybe the exception of
the power tools, will go for a song! My wife and I will be departing on
Amtrack Sunday for a two week trip to the west coast. We'll get back in time
to observe the auction.
