> The sad part of this is that the Grand River Models were real works of art
as were the Pine Canyon Models. Both have exited the field, and both rather
unexpectedly. I hope Jim King doesn't give up his plans. We can't lose
everyone!

Gents....
It might be helpful to look at this in some sort of a historical context.
Having been in S scale since 1969, I (and other wise olde men) can testify
to the steady influx of folks giving S a try and another steady outflux of
folks moving on to other areas. Virtually all the big names of yesteryear
are no longer with us -- except perhaps Scenery Unlimited and the S GAUGIAN
magazine and PBL.
In the brass arena, Overland Models, ALCO Models, Omnicon, Sunset, SouthWind
Models, and perhaps a few I have forgotten, have all ceased to import S
scale models for one reason or another. Fortunately, River Raisin Models,
the firm, is still with us although one of the founders has exited the
partnership.
In the craftsman kit category, Kinsman, Branch Line, DVM, Regal, Mainline
Models, DMK, Jon Beveridge, Locomotive Workshop, S Scale Loco & Supply, ACE,
Down's, etc., etc, (can't remember 'em all, but there are lots and lots
more) are no longer producing new kits. Fortunately, Jim King is now with
us and, in many respects, is outperforming all those other folks. Not to
forget Kaslo Shops as well in the ranks of newer S manufacturers.
In the magazine category, the S GAUGE HERALD (original), S GAUGE HERALD (new
owner), S GAUGE HERALD (last gasp), 3/16 "S"cale Railroading (best of all
even if I am biased), S/Sn3 Modeling Guide (original), S/Sn3 Modeling Guide
(new owner) and the S/Sn3 Modeling Guide (now in last gasp) have all come
and gone the way of the dodo bird. Only the S GAUGIAN and NASG's DISPATCH
remain as S-only publications. The secret to success in the publishing
field seems to be simple: keep expenses lower than low (minimize color and
don't pay anything for articles) and just keep breathing -- even if it
hurts. Besides magazines, Microscale decals have come and gone as well.
Decals are a publishing business -- sort of.
In the shake-da-box kit category, American Models is still with us, but who
else?? Was there ever any other nearly-but-not-quite-built rolling stock
kits like AM's?
Now on the other hand, the emergence of ready-to-run Chinese-built plastic
locos and cars has really been wonderful. Thanks to AM and SHS and Des
Plaines Hobbies for keeping the S flame alive. Personally, I like kits and
miss them. But that is life in the real world....
The main point of this epistle is to realize that just because one or two
folks have departed the S scale playing field is not particularly unusual.
Every year sees someone leaving us in one way or another. And we who remain
struggle along in spite of overwhelming odds. The joy of kitbashing and
scratchbuilding is one creative way to enjoy this adversity. Self
punishment in a new form. But I doubt very much that we will "lose
everyone" as feared. A few lost here and a few lost there to ultimately be
replaced with someone else who thinks it is their turn. That is the norm
for our favorite scale.
As a result of my belief about what is "normal" for S scale, I heartily
suggest you buy something as soon as it becomes available if it in any way
fits into your long range plans. I have been doing that for a few decades
now and it was the best decision possible (for me at least) since I now have
a more-or-less complete NYC empire without any missing major elements. Had
I waited until "later", it would have been impossible to obtain the right
stuff and the overall effect would have been less than. Think of the S
marketplace as a very temporary world and obtain your pleasures while you
can.
Just some philosophy to take yer minds off the stock market.
Have a good weekend....Ed L.
