Jim,

I am very saddened with the news of Charlie Smith's passing, but thank you
for letting us know. Charlie was a dedicated railroad person, and was
willing to help anyone that had an honest interest in railroads. I first
met Charlie in 1964 when he was working for NYC. He was a very soft spoken
and mild mannered person, but he was a "no nonsense" individual. When you
dealt with Charlie, you stayed with facts, and used common sense to solve a
problem. Our careers crossed paths at different times on all three of the
railroads he worked for, and when he worked for LT Klauder Associates
consulting firm after he retired from CR. He was also an O scale modeler,
although, I do not believe he had a layout. He is one of the few people I
knew who never owned an automobile. It was an honor to know Charlie. He
will be missed.

The NYCSHS web site announced that Charles M. Smith passed away on October
4th. He worked for the NYC, PC and CR in motive power prior to retirement
and was one of the founders of the NYC historical socitey. Anyone
requesting detailed info on the NYC would probably have corresponded with
Charlie through the years. His responses were always detailed, precise and
hand written!

I last corresponded with him in May regarding NYC M&E cars and the correct
horn sound for the Niagara. He sent me a great explanation of the Niagara's
diesel horn, why it was used and a photocopy of the actual catalog page used
to purchase horns from WABCO. Like I said, precise and hand written... He
will be missed...
