I think he ground out from behind the casting (probably with a Dremel and 
cutter) until it was thin enough. Some aircraft modelers do that to simulate 
battle damaged sheet metal - thin the plastic then poke and twist an Exacto 
blade to tear the thin material.

Excellent work.  I wonder how the builder got the rusted through effect 
on the fenders.  I have built a few of the railmaster trucks and the 
castings are fairly thick.  Love the cracked windshield!
