The most reliable spotting feature is that the GP-38 has the longer 2-segment
radiator
with widely spaced fans, while the GP38-2 (excepting the first few) has a
shorter single-
piece radiator with the fans close together.
The straight 38's have the bar -type radiator grilles, which carried over to
the Dash Two
line before the corrugated grilles were adopted.
The sight glass was an option on earlier units that becme standard on the Dash
Twos.
Beyond that, you're getting into things like hinged vs. bolted radiator covers,
etc.
