My better half and myself took Sunday PM off to visit some railroads
that are on tour for Model Railroad month. This weekend the tour was
mostly on the North side in some of the smaller communities. We got to
see four before the clock ran out. The third layout was a H0 layout
that has been on the tour for years but I never ventured that far North
(had to wait for gas prices to get higher!!). The railroad is a very
nicely done 20 x 40 layout that had been featured in local newspaper and
television. What makes it unusual was the fact that the
builder/owner/operator is deaf, but still he had a beautiful ATSF
Northern with sound! As I was taking in the dozens of vignettes a four
unit set of ATSF diesels was pulling up with a heavy train that was
barely moving. I noticed two diesels were on the ground and the rest
were slipping. Some hand signals flagged him to stop so we could
correct the situation.
This got me thinking that I operate and particularly, troubleshoot by
sound as much as visually. When we hear an engine start to growl we
know that trouble is coming. When we hear the circuit breaker start to
click we know that the train in the tunnel as shorted and perhaps
derailed. As creaky as my joints are getting, it sure is great to be
able to see and hear our trains!
