-0600Subject: {S-Scale List} open house this next weekend!
My layout, The Great Plains Northern Terminal Railroad, will be on tour on the
evening of Dec 5th and the afternoon of the 6th. I'm the only S layout this
year--my Sn3 friend decided to take the year off. So if your off the beaten
path in the Houston area stop by for a visit. To that end, last night after the
pumpkin pie, I started my annual wheel cleaning ceremony. I finished most of my
main freight yard and several nearby sidings. I've come to the conclusion that
the wheels that seem to stay the cleanest are the silver plated wheels,
followed by certain recent SHS wheel sets. Most of my wheel sets are NWSL and
SHS blackened brass wheels. Most of them need a fair amount of cleaning. Some
of the SHS wheels have a glossy finish and they do seem to stay cleaner. The
silver finished wheel sets are either imports or earlier shiny NWSL wheels.
Although I'm no expert, I would assume the plating or glossy surface is the
help here. Where the blackened wheel sets generally have a dull surface it must
attract and hold the dirt. This does bring up a question! If dust is generally
a light gray color and the oils/trackcleaning products are yellowish to
clear--why is the dirt on wheels black? So if we've figured out how to load a
hopper with broken glass put your minds to this one!Bob WerreBobWphoto.com
