I started this while discussion wrong to start with.  I said Scalecoat when I 
meant Polly Scale.  All of this has created some confusion.  Sorry about that.

  You have 2 issues here. First Scalecoat does not make Grimy Black; that is a
  Floquil color. Second, neither Scalecoat nor Floquil are thinned with water,
  so it is no wonder as to why you got bad results. You were trying to spray 2
  liquids that really don't play well together.

  I am a bit superstitious when it comes to paint thinners. I always use the
  same brand of thinner as the paint. The amount of thinner used is an eyeball
  thing for me. In the past 2 or so years I have added a little bit more
  thinner then I used to and got even better results. My friend actually
  counts out the drops of thinner he uses per bottle. That works very well for
  him too as his paint jobs as excellent.
