Bill, I can add another big road to the list of "last roads standing":
Canadian Pacific (1881). I presume you are thinking only of Class 1 carriers.
There are lots of smaller lines that have been around since the 19th Century
still operating under their original name. The oldest, of course, is Strasburg
(1837). To my knowledge, Strasburg is the oldest railroad in the world
operating under its original charter.
The Mt. Washington Cog has operated since 1867. I don't think it is still a
common carrier. You could also add Virginia & Truckee to the list because it
is the original corporation, even though it stopped operating for around 30
years and is no longer a common carrier.
Interestingly, all of the above run steam.
Of course, if I was picky, I might point out today's UP is not the original
company. The original UP Ry. bankrupted and was reorganized as the UP Rr.
But, I'm not picky. Besides, you are suffering enough over the loss of the
PRR, even though you can at least have the hope of seeing PRR steam running
again.
regards ... pqr
