Roland,

As long as the hobby is populated with "cottage-industry" and "family-
business" manufacturers you will have problems with supply. When
you're a one-man or father-son or husband & wife show, there will
always be some personal event, mood swing, or domestic crisis that
affects shipment. I'm not saying that this is a bad business model;
it's just a by-product of real life. Switching scales is not going to
change this unless you are willing to give up everything except mass-
produced locomotives and rolling stock.

A part listed in a catalogue does not guarantee availability. Neither
does a web page or press announcement. I've been waiting over 3
months for 100 castings ordered by phone directly from a very well-
known manufacturer. Apparently they shipped 2 days ago; I'll believe
it when they actually show up. At least they didn't bill me in
September.

I can recall waiting over 7 months for a brass casting that was back-
ordered from the manufacturer. It was part of a larger mould that
they didn't cast from very often, so basically I had to wait until
someone else ordered the rest of the items on the sprue. A crap shoot
at best.

If you want 100% availability, you'll have to make the pieces
yourself from scratch. This is fine provided a) you haven't run out
of the raw materials, b) you have a lot of free time, and c) you have
the skill to do it. Personally, I've got enough of a) and am still
working on b) and c).
