When i worked for the SP they had a rail welding plant in 
Tracy, California where 78 foot sections of rail were butt welded and 
then fed on to the rail train which was a 1/4 of mile long. This 
plant welded all the rail for BART. They then had to have the rail 
transferred at the BART yards in Hayward California to a BART rail 
train because BART is 5 ft 3 in gauge
