Son Bob....
The Wikipedia explanation is different from what my son-in-law told
me. I would tend to give the 'accuracy award' to Wikipedia in this
instance. My interpretation of the Wiki information is that rail is
pre-stretched (or heated) to be at the equivalent of the "neutral
temperature" when the track is physically being laid. Neutral
temperature is about halfway between the maximum and minimum expected
temperatures. Thus, problems of contraction/expansion are reduced, but
not totally eliminated.
By the way, Earl calls me "Nephew Ed". Dick calls me "Brother Ed".
Now I am "Father Ed" as well. As long as nobody calls me "Sister Ed"
of "Mother Ed", I will not complain.
Cheers...Ed L.
