Bob and all,
I'd like to diverge slightly from what you said and throw out a few comments
of my own regarding the SHS 2-8-0. I'm a NYC buff and in particular, I love
big/heavy steam power, and yes, with scale wheels and couplers! Way back in
'86, plus or minus, Walt Danylak and company imported NYC Hudsons through
Overland. Just what I needed.....three to be exact at around $500-600 a pop.
I thought they were great, a good runner, good detail, etc. However, they
needed a paint job at around $150 each. Compare that with the SHS 2-8-0, not
my favorite type engine, but I have two, which have of course, NYC markings and
are among the sweetest runners I own. The Hudsons, Mohawks and Niagaras look
great, but do not compare in quality, performance, and servicablity with the
SHS Consolidateds. Then compare the price......$600 to over $1000 dollars back
then and without sound! Today, we can be grateful to Don and Mike for their
time and investment in making such high quality equipment available at great
prices. In all fairness to Dan (and previously Jim) at River Raisin, their
brass imports have been Premier and for the price, are well worth it. The
performance is unmatched in other brass offerings and second to none! I
coughed up the necessary bucks and purchased a couple of NYC Heavy Mikes and
NKP Berkshires and not a bit sorry. An added bonus in RR brass is they are now
coming DCC ready. This is a great advantage if you want to optimize your RR by
getting into DCC, or are already there! Hats off to those in S, to include
American Models and Des Planes Hobbies, and numerous others, willing to make
the sacrifice to make our gauge and hobby a satisfying rewarding one! Merry
christmas to all!
