the cost by having the convention held in a cheap motel. I hear
similar complaints from the dutiful modelers who are members of a
various railroad historical society. An HO friend and I talked about
making a one-day attendance at the Milwaukee Road convention this year
in Terre Haute, but the cost of a one-day attendance was still 100
Dollars, a bit pricey. And even that would probably have required
two-nights at a motel in said location.

We used to say that all S Gaugers needed to hold a convention was an
empty fire station, a Denny's, and a Motel 6. I guess even now Motel 6
rates are reaching the stratosphere.
On the other hand, some are actually pricing themselves out of the
relaxing enjoyment of a convention with high-cost control systems and
other mind-bending frustrations and "must have" absurdities.
Did anybody read the long, drawn out dissertation on how to work with
DCC in the latest Scale Rails (NMRA Publication), and every month in
MR? No wonder nobody wants to get into model railroading any more.
Might as well buy a Wii system - it's cheaper, and the gratification
is instant, as opposed to satisfaction, like an Athearn diesel, or a
high-quality Mantua train set used to be.
I haven't been to very many meets and conventions lately, either, but
that's due to personal circumstances, not because I don't have the money.
