Hi'Ya Fellow "S"-heads:

Over the years I have frequented many different public forums, some of them
model train oriented. Due to my previous explorations of 3 rail, I still
hang around the various forums at one model train forum. Said forum site
has an "S Scale" forum. A fellow happened by that was debating going either
3 rail or S scale. I spent some time helping him understand more about S
scale and what it has to offer.

In the process... several others jumped in and injected THEIR "favorite"
scale. (Which to me was tacky. He wasn't asking about "THEIR" scale... he
was asking about S scale in an S scale forum.) Anyrate... it is amazing the
resistance seen toward S scale... even at the hobby shop level! To wit,
below is a copy/paste of my reply to some guy that hopped in and told of his
"O or S" experience, and how his LHS (Local Hobby Shop) "helped" him see the
light.

Well of COURSE he would, Hokk. That's a no-brainer. He wants to push what he
stocks and sells, regardless of any advantages/disadvantages.

It is true that to effectively model in S scale (not S hi-rail), you have to
be familiar with online shopping.

There is simply no comparison to the state of the art in regards to S scale
equipment and the best of so-called "3RS" (i.e. "3 Rail Scale"). Further,
when one views one's S scale layout, it requires no mental shananagins to
explain/apologize/"ignore-it-if-you-can" concerning that visually obvious
and totally unprototypical third rail.

Some time ago I found I just couldn't be satisfied with 3R, either in the
traditional, hi-rail... or even the "3RS" idea that is being foisted. I
liked the increased size of O over HO, but there was no way I had the space
to go to honest-to-God 2 rail O scale.

I was completely unfamiliar with S scale offerings, so I invested a
reasonable amount of money to look it over: Some flex track, a switch, one
state-of-the-art locomotive (an SHS SW9), and a couple pieces of rolling
stock.

I was blown away by its perfect size and wonderful scale appearance. There
has been no looking back.

Each one must find his own way in this hobby... but sometimes superb
alternatives can be discovered by looking outside the most financially
popular box.

Whatever is decided: Have fun!

Sheesh. One really feels like it is an uphill battle because of the bias
even tyring to help someone that is INTERESTED in S scale... the "most
popular" scale Evangelists just HAVE to have their say!

Okay, okay... sorry for the rant. But I felt that surely many of you would
know how I felt.
