Well, the polemic back and forth about rates and lodging may well have reached
its point of no return. The solution is simple: Those who can afford to attend
every year should do so. Those who cannot afford to attend every year should
not do so. Those who attend only when a convention is within a reasonable
drive, train ride, or flight should attend only when the distance is right for
them. Those who cannot afford the lodging at the designated venue should find
a reasonable accommodation and use it. That's about it. Certain costs are
fixed, albeit at different rates depending on the city and hotel used as the
main site. Life is like that. One possibility: hotels in Duluth, Minnesota,
would probably offer marvelous rates in January or February.
