The November 1982 Mainline Modeler has a nice article, including several S scale drawings. The M53 cars began construction in June 1937 and were completed in March 1938. With the 40 year interchange rule you can reasonably expect some of the cars to last into the mid-70's. What percentage of the original 2000 M53's would have been left by then would take more research. According to the Mainline article, Chessie System showed seven M53 cars "in service" in 1982.
