David, I am working on a city se. I have been using S scale kits for the
foreground and HO for the mid and background. You can also use HO scale for the
foreground provided that you insert S scale doors and avoid any jarring
contrasts when placing the modified HO near the true S. There are a lot of
candidates out there. The Scenery Unlimited catalogue suggests a few and the
Walthers catalogue will give you some good ideas. Most of the Walthers
background/flat structures are good candidates. Look for the ones which are
easy to
cut.
In a recent Classic Trains magazine, the author discussed using HO
models as backdrop for a O scale layout and suggested a few rules to follow.
You
can achieve similar results for your S scale layout by following his rules.
Regards.
Paul S.
