Earl,
Actually it's not quite that easy. First off, Des Plaines sells several PRR
decal sets. None of
them is the exact match for your cars as none have L&N included for the
letterboard. As
you can see in the photograph you referenced the L&N is not written in "script"
as was
common for their other passenger cars. It uses a typeface that matches the
PRR. You
could buy enough PRR sets to make "Louisville & Nashville", but there is no
"O", "H", or
ampersand. You would also need some "Pre-war" sets to get a "U" from
"Pullman". You
might need to buy enough sets that it would be worth it to seek a custom decal
manufacturer. The year would determine whether you need "gold leaf" lettering
or "Dulux
Gold". The change over was in 1953 for sleepers on the PRR. I can't tell when
the L&N did
the same, but I'd say the photo of "Green River" shows it with "Dulux"
lettering. The DPH
web site lists PRR-1 as "Heavyweight Pullman Passenger Cars With Stripes Bronze
Gold
Lettering". "Bronze Gold would be like gold leaf. This set has the widest
variety on names,
but none of them match any words on your cars, so you are looking at a cut and
paste job.
PRR-3 says it is for "Pre-War Lightweight Pullman Passenger Cars". Every set
I've found in
these envelopes is actually for post war cars. This would cover the PRR
versions of the
cars in question as the set has several choices in the "Rapids" series, but
alas, no words
that will help for the L&N without cutting and pasting. The only set listed in
"Dulux", or as
they say "Buff" is PRR-10 which covers PRR passenger cars in general and has no
car
names. There are probably enough small letters to cover most of your needs,
but at what
cost? In an interesting bit of S scale decal history, the actual PRR-3 set
"Pre-War" must
exist somewhere as I was given half a set to review many years ago, and the
decals that
are in the PRR-3 envelopes, some of which have been relettered "Post-War" do
not appear
on Des Plaines' list of available sets! Please do not take these comments as
being critical
of the DPH sets. I am trying to point out the trouble in lettering L&N cars
with them. They
are not L&N sets. They are great for PRR cars, and if anyone has any of the
actual "PRR-3
Pre-War" sets they would like to sell let me know. (You can tell by the car
names and by
the fact that they will have the large "Pullman" as well as "Pennsylvania"
included.)
On to the paint. After printing a book that caused three paint manufacturers
to change
their formulas, my beloved PRRT&HS admitted that their version of the color is
too dark.
Scalecoat "Tuscan" is a dead on match for the color swatch in the book, but
does that
make it too dark? I have been thinking of evolving a color by starting with
the Scalecoat
version and adding a small amount of "Roof Brown". I have seen some formulas
for mixing
Tuscan from acrylic paints, but I can't recall any at the moment. Are yo sorry
you asked
yet?
