That is a bit different from the information making the rounds of other lists. 
The jist being that Kalmbach's IT people insisted on pulling the plug because 
they felt the old software was vulnerable. Pretty standard for corporate IT if 
they don't know/can't verify a piece of software. This is the first I have 
heard that there was an actual attack on the software.

The index is owned by Kalmbach, having been sold to them by the original 
creator, but they have apparently agreed to to make an arraignment to transfer 
it to NMRA, who plan modernize it; probably by extracting the information and 
entering it into a new database. The original programmer (Jeff Scherb) has been 
contacted and indicated some willingness to help. Joe Fugate of Model Railroad 
Hobbyist online magazine is one of the parties in the discussion urging it's 
transfer to NMRA. Some info is on the MR Hobbyist forums, other posts on STMFC 
Yahoo list and MRs own forums.
