Jeff, The NF&G was my second choice as I have the equipment to do it in the
steam and diesel era. There is plenty of detail parts available to bring the RS
3 and the GP 9 up to todays standards. You can also do a GP 7 from DPH parts.
I left HO 30 yrs ago because of size and reliability, then on to O scale, lasted
4 yrs due to area it it takes. I quit trains for about 4 yrs until a friend
asked me to paint an S scale loco a USRA 2 8 2 and I was sold on it. I have
been in S since 95 and enjoy the size and reliability. I use Tomalco track and
use Lenz DCC. The C&O and NYC is the best of all but I lean toward C&O< they
have the best of the best. Thanks B Cutler

Well I realized you guys really don't have an idea where I model so here
it is:

late 50's to early 70's

New York Central and C&O

Coal country specifically WV, specifically southern WV on the NF&G

I am currently researching the C&O and NYC's joint line, the Nicholas, Fayette
and Greenbrier.

I have noticed that some of the american models diesels (rs-3 and GP-9) lack
detail, while others (e-8, fp-7). Are the low detail ones from a long time ago?

Some other thing that I should mention are that I picked up interest in larger
scale from David Stewart's A&O (aorailroad.com). I saw S scale as a viable
solution in my space after visting Peter Vanvilet's site. I am also new to the
having only been it for 1 year and a 1/4. Meaning that I have yet to acquire
many of the tools of the trade as well as rollingstock. I am also apprehensive
of kits because to this date I have only built one-an accurail 55 to hopper,
which I successfully managed to butcher. Even before I bought anything in ho I
considered moving to a larger scale. However, I never thought it feasible until
recently. Lastly I always plan on using dcc since I have NEVER used DC before.
