I received word that our last guest has arrived home safe and well so after a
quick trip to Camp Ripley life returns to some resemblance of normal. I will
look through Bill's photo album as I have yet to see a good shot of the
Canadian National ore train passing over our tour train just outside of Two
Harbors. Now of all the neat tricks Jan scheduled for the convention, that has
to be close to the top.
I have been down in the layout room since the convention and actually, I am
looking forward to getting some things done. I have a crossing where a
straight track will cross a curving track. This is a perfect opportunity to
use the technique Dick Karnes showed us in Duluth.
I noted the comments about turnouts. I like the Tamalco but as has been noted,
you need to check them as you are laying them to assure they are spot on. At
the recent NMRA Convention, the NMRA standards folks said you could build a
turnout within tolerances and it would "work" but.... Seems that they are
going to tighten the tolerances to make good enough better. Dave Jasper was in
the clinic, I have not seen the information they shared but there was a bit of
conversation around the convention about that. Currently, the Fast Tracks jigs
are the only commercially available device that creates a turnout to the new
specs.
That said, I am using a number of Shinohara number 8's without problem as well
as Tomalco. With either, I wire them to be "DCC friendly". As delivered they
will work well with DCC, I just like to have the frog isolated and the
diverging rails wired to their stock rails.
All in all, it is quiet, just too quiet, even Sassy is missing all the activity.
