Good Evening,
In 1989, My Dad and I used several #6 Shinohara turnouts he had previously
purchased on the passenger terminal on the Houston S mod layout. (Later we
wished we would have had the Shinohara #8s to use instead.) The
#6s worked alright on the passing siding on the freight main(shorter cars), but
the passenger terminal ladder was a mess with Shinohara #6 design flaws. The
short distances between the points and the frog and the use of long passenger
cars enhanced the problems. (The 6 wheel American Models passenger trucks
really hated them!) Most of those problem Shinoharas have now been replaced
with custom built turnouts.
As for RTR track, We used "RTR" Tomalco turnouts when we built the large
staging yard for the Dallas S scalers modular layout. To Ken's earlier point,
they came "RTR" and DCC ready with the rails glued down to the ties with acc.
All of them (20) were out of gauge in various places and the rails had to be
pryed away from the glue and re-spiked using the NASG track gauge. The end
results were great and despite the consistency in the gauge, I would recommend
Tomalco's turnouts to all and I have been told that Larry did correct the gauge
issues.
On my layout, I am using Fast Tracks turnouts and in my opinion, they are
superb to anything currently available in RTR or kit form. With about two
hours assembly time and another two hours to install them, they are far from
ready to run but boy do they run! The trains glide through the #6 and #8
turnouts without any noise! The frog tolerances are so good the wheels do not
drop into the frog. My railroad's purchasing agent just picked up a #10 Fast
Tracks jig at Duluth and I am looking forward to building a couple and watching
the long stack trains roll through them soon.
