In our local arena, we have been bypassed by the large train shows in
recent years but our San Jacinto MRRC puts on a one day show with nearly
everything a 'convention' puts on except for prototype tours. We have
clinics, module setups, model contest, switching layouts, layout tours
after hours and a room full of vendors that range from book/video
sellers, heavily used stuff, to new stuff. Since it's a three ring
circus one needs to plan his time well but it's all doable for most.
The vendors seem to like it although often the setup/teardown occupies
much of the day. I have been somewhat surprised that there still seems
to be interest in the swap table type vendors since the on line auctions
have opened up a new world of acquiring 'stuff'. In the photography
equipment area, we used to have a twice a year show that always got a
few dollars from me, but it's been gone for 3 years now.

I do believe that we could become civilized and get out of the "Walmart
open all the time thing" and have some off time. The Duluth Convention,
despite being divided by two cities, came pretty close to covering all
the bases correctly. The problem of time in the vendor area is
inversely proportional to the length of any of the tours, so I can see
why an all day tour would cut down on dealer sales--assuming there were
enough people to do both!
