I paint my rail after it is in place with a #0 artist's paintbrush and Floquil 
Rail Brown.  I drag the brush along the rail web so as to deposit paint on the 

ties as well, leaving an approximation of tie plates as I go.  And if you 
already have tie plates (as with flextrack), the plates will be properly 
colored 
with this method.

Most of my trackage can be viewed from only one side.  In these areas, I don't 
bother painting the "blind" side.
