The first replacements Charlie made were blind drivers, but the maker made them the same thickness as the flanged drivers. The thin blind drivers dropped thru the rails on any small curve. The next change was thicker or wider blind drivers. by that time Charlie was up to his ears in driver sets. I spent a lot of time with Charlie, both at Fests or the times he showed up at my front door unannounced.
S sort of stopped dead when Charlie died. Thank god for Jettie and S Helper. A couple of decades ago Charlie Sandersfeld's Omnicon imported several versions of the PRR M-1 (4-8-2). When they arrived with blind second and third driver sets, some people complained loudly enough that Charlie offered an all-flanged version too. Guess what? The prototype had blind second and third driver sets. And guess what again? The models with all-flanged drivers did not run -- The flanges interfered with each other because the driver spacing was prototypical. How do I know? I repaired/made runnable four of these critters for Larry Sokol. 2. At the 2009 NASG Convention in St. Louis, I took a fan trip to the Transport Museum (or whatever it's called these days). One of the display sheds contains several 1860-era steam locomotives, a couple of which are ten-wheelers (4-6-0). On these locos, the first and second driver sets are flangeless! Only the pilot truck and last driver set are flanged.
