On this Battery powered idea.
My neighbor that got me into model RR's about 25 years ago, had designed a
primitive DCC, using an Apple II computer to control his layout. I think he
could even throw some switched with the computer. He was never able to see it
to completion, due to life changes, and eventually passed away.
As a 10 year old kid dreaming back then, seeing the Model Railroader spreads
on the Beautiful HO layout in Northern Illinois, was it Batavia? using
walk-around controls, like that of a model airplane...... I always dreamed of
technology for a true remote-control train operations. My thought has been a
set voltage on the rails just as "Real" electric operations run (but in
Centenary), and then the r/c controls would run the units, allowing for a
reverser (change of polarity) for directional changes, lights, horn, bell, etc.
could be fed constantly, and track "blocking" and such popular items as
"powered frogs" would be much easier to design.
I still think this system would work fine, but the hobby has seemed to take
the road toward DCC, for the most part anyhow. Not currently having a layout,
but hoping to get one started again, has brought back some of these ideas.
Just a thought for another rainy Saturday in the Northland. So far in 3 days
we have had somewhere between 10' and 14" of rain, depending on exact locations
in Southern MN. At least 12" here.
