Spent some time installing new universal drive shafts in RS-2 #34 and RS-3 #35.
#34 responded favorably and now runs smooth and quiet. #35, however, is still
sluggish, although it does now run quiet.
I finally got some ex-Hobbytown drive shafts. The improvement they make as far
as smooth and quiet operation where these old ALCO MODELS relics are concerned
is nothing short of amazing.
I suspect the gearboxes in #35 are still a little tight from shrinkage they
experienced during the years in storage. I cleaned them out a couple of years
ago, and just recently lapped the bearings with some granite dust and WD-40,
but the idler gears still seem to mesh a little tight. For the time being, the
locomotive is serviceable, so I'll give it a rest for a while.
I also narrowed a couple of Lionel gondolas for work train service to carry
parts and supplies to whatever part of the layout I happen to be working on.
Nothing fancy here, just raw modification to fit the need.
