These units sound fantastic!  Please post pictures.

With respect to you question, I use the Soundtraxx EMD 567 Tsunami for all my F 
units (F3 & F7s) and am very happy with the results.

SHS sells (or used to sell) a plug that will fit their F3 boards.  Simply hard 
wire the decoder to the plug, adding the appropriate resistors for the lights, 
and you are good to go.  

I am not familiar with the set up of the power chassis of the AM units, but I 
would guess that you would need to hard wire the decoder to the appropriate 
leads.

Both of these are very simple jobs if you know how to use a soldering iron and 
have the property tools and equipment.
