You know, Jim has made a very good point.  I have assumed, however, that most 
of us older types now in the hobby in our youth found railroads more accessible 
than they are to the youth of today.
We wandered down to the railroad yards of whatever line, viewed the operations, 
possibly spoke with a friendly railroader, and may have ridden passenger 
trains.  There were many short but pleasant rides to choose from back then.  
That was then; this is now.  Point taken, Jim.
