PENN CENTRAL once shipped a gondola load of steel plates from LUKENS in  
Coatesville , PA to "never" land.  The "lost" gondola, now loaded with  sand, 
was found in Texas months (many) later . NO ONE ever figured out what  
happened to the steel.  So the story goes----

Sometimes sand could be shipped long distances for glass making or  foundry 
work. An extreme case being a ship load of sand transported some years  ago 
from the U.S. - to Egypt!
