I remember see 172 brass track at the bonny store in Benton Harbor MI.
They used it as test track when repair the wires that always got un soldered. 
That was 1955.

As a adult I went to a train store closing in Pasadena Calif. and bought all 
the brass track and switches.

I understand people cut HO track down the middle and ran S Scale on it.
