R-T-R may be dwindling but I am really happy with the new passenger car
kits from The Supply Car. I received my first three kits from Bob McCarthy
at the Blue Ridge Scalers meeting this past weekend. They challenge my weak
modeling skills but I feel really good about thiese kits. I hope to build
a representative Southern Crescent consist with both Budds and PS cars
behind my already-decorated E8s.

Grandt Line still has a lot of S available. You can at least use their web
site as an online catalog. If they don't have it, check with Hoquot or Des
Plaines. Turner has structural detail as do many others. I see pretty much
all kits as packaged raw material. I can't remember the last time I built a
kit strictly per the instructions.

This is my sentiment exactly.

I can buy dimensional stripwood, bass or other sheet wood, and most of
the basics for doing either cars or structures but I can't easily make
windows, doors, chimneys and all the other little parts needed to make a
convincing structures or car.

The only real advantage I see to buying kits is that all the needed
parts are already there. Often though other than the details the kit is
not suitable for my era or area so I don't even consider it.

I'm trying to recreate a lot of what I knew growing up and there are no
kits that are going to allow me to do that but having access to the
detail parts will.

Just another .02 worth.
