This recent post from BrassLocoBuilders group, for those interested in true scale:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brasslocobuilders/message/4058 or, for those who need the text: I've been spending a lot of time making patterns and casting parts for the Overland Models GS-4 lately. I finally retired and now have the time to do all those things I've always wanted to get done in the hobby!!!!!! So what happened to all that free time I waz suppose to have? The S scale GS-4 model was imported as an as built early version and I am making the later version out of two of them as they were in 1948. I have made the hand rail end ball cap castings with a 0.018 hole in the end, two sizes. One for the hand rail ends on the boiler front, 2 ea, and the other size is for the handrails on the boiler, 6 ea. since there are two hand rails on each side of the boiler. I also have the longer rectangular mufflers that they added later when shopped, 2 ea. The drop handrail posts that go in front of the new location of the train indicator boards for the hand rails, 10 ea. these were added when the indicator boards were moved back. The model was shipped with solid front marker light housings and I made up new hollow front marker light housings with a short tube that goes through the skyline casing and smoke box side to allow installing bulbs or LED's This next week I will be casting up the hand rails that Overland should have included that go on the sheet metal covers over the sanders. There are 4 ea. of one size on the engineers side that are over and under the front end throttle rod and two longer ones that are on the fireman's side. These will be castings with a 0.013 grab rail and simulated bolt head and pins on the underside that go into holes that need to be drilled. When the SP moved the train indicator boards back they also changed the angle of the number board. River Raisin has some of these new number boards in stock and I will be using theirs for my models so I will not be casting any of them. I don't think River Raisin has the actual number panels that go on these boards so i cast ed up some. i really need to get a sheet to go behind these panels made of really thin brass with the train numbers etched into them. i heard that some out there is making up number panels for HO and those just may work! I am also replacing the Sagami motor that the model came with and am using one of the Maxon motors River Raisin sells with the precious metal brushes (silver), expensive, yes, but vibration free and no cogging, max current draw at stall is 0.9 amp These models were delivered with a fabricated gear box and a 21:1 gear ratio. I plan on converting that to a 25:1 gear ratio. There are several options to do this and I plan on using NWSL parts. I also removed the front steps when i soldered the skirts to the running boards and then soldered the pilot to the skirts and made up my own front steps. The originals were cast and that made the skirts appear to be about 6 inches thick when viewed from the front. I am considering making up new castings to be used when skirts are applied, the jury is still out on this along with the little access door to get at the horn, up top on the side of the skyline casing, fireman's side at the front. I will be at "O Scale West" in January and plan on having all of this done by then, yeah, right., and painted with DCC installed too!!!!! If you are an S scaler and are looking for any of these parts contact me off list and we can work out the details. Rusty Owner/brasslocobuilders ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
