I just bought another Miller and continue to learn more about what has been in
S scale.
This also has the after-market "Beveridge"(?)/Cascade(?) drive with Lindsay
gearboxes
and Sagami can motor but without the lost-wax sprung AAR switcher sideframes
and heavy-gage sheet brass
formed bolster (sold by G&W?). Instead it has white-metal AAR sideframe
castings and
only home-made (clearly not commercial product) bent-up brass bolsters (which I
shall
be replacing when I figure out what should go there).
>From the information other list members provided nearly a year back when I was
>trying to get
information on my first S-4, there were a limited number of the lost-wax trucks
produced with
the idea of upgrading the AF Baldwin switchers (sorely needed now for the
better AM ones), but
some entrepeneurial spirit figured out they would also work for a replacement
drive for the Miller.
And I conjecture the supply of brass trucks was exhausted before the demand for
replacement drives.
I would be glad of more definite information on what I have. I've never seen a
LWS kit for his Alco or
EMD's, so have no idea what Jan Lorenzen used for sideframes--could these have
come from his molds?
It is regrettable that Southwind (now BTS) never had occasion to produce brass
switcher sideframes (their
Alco AAR type B's and Blombergs are fine from what I've seen). When I wrote
Railmaster about buying
a set of their sideframes, preferably Alco Blunts, but would have taken AAR, I
was told that they were not
available separately, as the castings were part of the mold for the entire kit.
