When I was working for the Southern Pacific as a 
Maintenance of way Electrician I watched a tow truck driver go around 
the lowered gate as Amtrak's San Joaquin was approaching. He made it. 
I learned early on to always stand on the side of the road the train 
was approaching. That way the flying shrapnel would be going away 
from where I was standing. The San Joaquin I learned later  was 
allowed 60 MPH in that area.
