Lots of sites automatically sign you up for automatic renewal with 
whatever payment method you originally used and hide that fact in the 50 
pages agreement nobody ever reads.

It took me complaints to the CA, NY, and PA attorneys general but I 
finally got my money back from classmates.com who did that to me a while 
back.

I have since started checking my accounts with every place I have any 
type of subscription to make sure none are on automatic. It's just a 
scam to make sure you renew since most of them don't remind you. The 
only site I have belonged to that had an automatic renewal (which was an 
active yes, not hidden) was the BMW CCA car club and even though I was 
on automatic, they send me a reminder about 60 days in advance.

All the other ones I consider shysters.
