I don't know about the other members of SSTOT but I model a freelance regional
railway set in the 1990s (when I switched to S) So SD60s and maybe the U boats
coming from Lionel are relatively modern and GP 35s, GP 9s are still common.
But most of the freight cars avcailable in S aren't although Des Plaines/PRS
(especially the PS boxcars and coal gons), American Models (box cars, tanks and
covered hoppers) and Bill Wade have tried to fill the gap. If you don't have
BTS's Evans gons, you should check them out. Top notch models. I don't remember
the time line for his 50 foot flats but I have a couple for special duty use.
Also nice cars. The new Iron Road tank cars sound promosing. Pricey but that's
the future folks. Even some SHS cars are usable in my era and it does offer RB
trucks which were standard by my era.
To me, it makes more sense to build up the availability of modern (post 1975)
freight cars I wonder how many S scalers model mainline ops that would use a
4400 or SD70. One of the companies offered a brass GE unit at a new bad price a
couple of years ago but few people bit.
Intermodal is a big part of modern railroading but hard to justify on my
regional even though I do have some well cars.
cheers
