Among the things I have accomplished this past week includes re-laying an Old
Pullman #5 switch on a styrene base. my M.O. for these switches is to leave
them alone as long as they work, but when I have to spend too much time
re-adjusting and re-gauging them, they get the supreme MOW treatment.
I have been happy with this, because they are no longer vulnerable to
temperature/humidity changes on the Homasote roadbed in the yards. They simply
float on top of it. I use the rail anchors from Atlas flex-trak ties to hold
them in place. I have developed ways to mount them with either hinged points or
solid point/frog assemblies.
Yesterday, I began wiring the new yardmaster panel for Terminal District, so,
for the time being, at least, TD is out of service. since this yard is a
remnant of the old, now dismantled SHABBONA RR, I am also taking time to clear
up the rat's nest of wiring that I thought was so neat those many years ago.
One way I'm doing this, the main wires run along the outside edge of the outer
L-girder on the benchwork. The only wires running under the layout are the
feeder wires to the individual blocks. Another thing I am taking time to do is
install plugs between the control panel terminal blocks and the rest of the
wiring so that Should The Time Ever Come, the control panel can be removed with
by disconnecting the series of specific plugs. Re-installing the panel will be
a simple matter of reconnecting the plugs in proper order.
I hope that don't happen in my lifetime!
